Common Google Merchant Center Disapprovals and How to Fix Them

The Merchant Center disapprovals Shopify stores see most — price and availability mismatch, missing or invalid GTIN, image problems, missing shipping, landing page errors, mismatched values and policy issues such as misrepresentation — what causes each, how to fix it at the source and how to request a re-review.
How to read Diagnostics before you change anything
Merchant Center → Diagnostics has three tabs. Account issues affect every product at once and come first. Item issues list product-level problems, each with a severity: disapprovals remove the item from Shopping; warnings keep it live but limit performance; and 'opportunities' are suggestions. Feed issues relate to the file or connection itself. Sort Item issues by the number of affected products and work from the top — one root cause in Shopify usually explains dozens of disapproved items.
Click any issue to download the list of affected products. Before editing, open two or three of them in Shopify and on the live store, because the fix is almost always in the source data or on the product page, not in Merchant Center.
Price mismatch and availability mismatch
Google crawls your product page and compares what a shopper sees with what the feed says. If the price or stock differs, the item is disapproved as 'Mismatched value (page crawl)' for price or availability. Common causes on Shopify stores: a variant price differs from the default variant Shopify sent; the page shows prices including tax while the feed excludes it (or the reverse); a sale price is live on the page but the feed carries only the regular price; currency conversion apps show a different currency to the crawler; a pre-order or back-order item is listed as 'in stock'; and structured data (schema.org Offer) on the theme reports a stale price.
Fix the source: make sure Shopify's price, compare-at price and inventory are the truth, check the theme's product structured data shows the same values, and enable 'automatic item updates' in Merchant Center settings so Google corrects small mismatches instead of disapproving. If you edit prices in bulk, let the Shopify channel re-sync before expecting Merchant Center to clear the issue.
Missing or invalid GTIN, and other identifier problems
Branded, mass-produced products need unique product identifiers: GTIN (barcode), brand and often MPN. Shopify sends the Barcode field as GTIN and the Vendor field as brand. Typical issues: 'Missing value: GTIN' (barcode blank for a branded product), 'Invalid value: GTIN' (wrong length, typo, internal SKU entered as a barcode, or a code with a bad check digit), 'Ambiguous value' (a GTIN that belongs to a different product), and 'Limited performance due to missing identifiers' (a warning, not a disapproval, but it suppresses visibility).
Enter the real barcode from the manufacturer or packaging; validate it with a GTIN checker if in doubt. For products that genuinely have no GTIN — handmade, custom, vintage, private-label items made for you — set identifier_exists to false (in the Google & YouTube channel this is the 'This product doesn't have a GTIN' option, or via a supplemental feed) and still provide brand where one exists. Never invent or reuse codes; Google treats that as a misrepresentation signal.
Image problems
Image disapprovals include 'Image too small' (minimum 100×100 px; 800×800 recommended for Shopping, 250×250 for apparel), 'Promotional overlay on image' (text, badges, 'Free shipping', watermarks or logos added on top of the product image), 'Generic image' (a placeholder or logo instead of the product), 'Invalid image' or 'Image not retrievable' (the URL returns an error or your CDN blocks Google's crawler), and image link mismatches between variants.
Use a clean product image on a plain background as the main image, move marketing graphics to additional images or the page itself, and make sure images are reachable without login or geoblocking. In Merchant Center you can request a one-time 'Automatic image improvements' pass that strips overlays, but fixing the source image is more reliable. Give the feed a fetch cycle after replacing images — Google re-downloads them on the next crawl.
Missing shipping, tax or return information
'Missing value: shipping' means Merchant Center has no delivery cost for the item's target country. Either import shipping settings from Shopify in the Google & YouTube channel, or create shipping services directly in Merchant Center → Shipping and returns with a flat rate, free shipping threshold or carrier-calculated rates. For US stores, tax settings are also required. Items will stay excluded until a shipping configuration covers them.
Separately, a visible returns and refund policy on your store (and, optionally, a return policy configured in Merchant Center) is a trust signal that policy reviewers look for; stores without one are more likely to see account-level issues.
Landing page issues
'Unavailable desktop landing page' or 'Unavailable mobile landing page' means Google could not load the product URL in the feed: the page is a 404 after a handle change, it redirects to a collection or the homepage, the variant URL is broken, password protection is on, the theme serves an error on mobile, or robots.txt or a bot-protection app is blocking Google's crawler. 'Landing page not crawlable' is the robots version of the same problem.
Test the exact URL from the feed in a private browser window and on a phone, check Shopify's URL redirects after renaming products, and make sure any firewall or bot-management app allowlists Googlebot and Google's Merchant Center crawler. If a product was deleted, archive it in Shopify rather than leaving a dead feed item.
Mismatched or missing values from the page crawl
Beyond price and availability, Google compares other attributes with your page: 'Mismatched value (page crawl)' for condition, 'Missing value' for description, title or color/size in apparel categories, and 'Unavailable text' when the page content differs sharply from the feed title. These are usually data-entry gaps in Shopify — a product with an empty description, a title that is just a SKU, or apparel variants where colour and size are not set as proper option names.
Fill in the missing attributes in Shopify, use descriptive titles (brand + product type + key attributes), and for apparel make sure option names are literally Color and Size so the channel maps them to the right Google attributes. For attributes Shopify has no field for, a supplemental feed in Merchant Center lets you add or override values without touching your store.
Policy disapprovals: misrepresentation, restricted and unsupported content
Policy issues are stricter and slower to resolve. 'Misrepresentation' at account level suspends everything and typically stems from trust problems on the site: missing or vague contact details, no returns or privacy policy, unrealistic discounts or 'compare-at' pricing, an unfinished checkout, a domain that does not match the business name, or claims that cannot be verified. Item-level policy flags include restricted categories (healthcare, supplements, alcohol, adult, weapons, financial products) that need certification or are not allowed in some countries, and 'Unsupported Shopping content' for services, memberships, digital goods or bundles priced per unit.
Address the website first — clear contact page, policies linked in the footer, complete About page, realistic pricing, working checkout, consistent business name across site, domain and Merchant Center — then request a review. Account reviews can take several business days and Google limits how often you can re-request, so fix everything before you ask. Do not create a second Merchant Center account to bypass a suspension; that is itself a policy violation.
Requesting a re-review and how long it takes
Item-level disapprovals usually clear on their own within a few business days once the feed and page agree, because Google re-crawls regularly. For page-crawl mismatches you can also open the item and use 'Request review' to speed it up. Account-level issues require a manual request under Diagnostics → Account issues, and you should expect several business days for a response.
Keep a simple log: the issue name, the fix you made, the date you requested a review. If the same disapproval returns, the fix did not reach the source — the page or feed still disagrees — and that is the thing to check next.
When to get help
Most disapprovals are fixable in Shopify in an afternoon once you know the pattern. The cases that justify outside help are account-level suspensions, large catalogues where the same issue affects hundreds of items, apparel feeds with complex variant mapping, and stores that have already requested reviews unsuccessfully. AdsZeno's disapproval investigation service reviews your Diagnostics, product data and site, advises on compliant fixes and helps you request re-review — without guaranteeing approval, because the decision is Google's. For stores whose product data lives in Merchant Center, the SyncMerchant app keeps Shopify consistent with it on a schedule, which removes the mismatch disapprovals that come from the two systems drifting apart.
