Why Are My Products Missing from Google Merchant Center? A Troubleshooting Guide

A step-by-step way to find out why Shopify products are missing from Google Merchant Center or Google Shopping: products never submitted, stuck in processing, excluded by the feed, disapproved, approved but not serving, or expired after approval — and what to do about each.

First, work out where the products are missing

'Missing' means different things, and each has a different cause. A product can be absent from Merchant Center entirely (it was never submitted), present but not yet active (still processing or under review), present but disapproved (submitted, then rejected), active but not appearing in Google Shopping results or ads (eligible, but not being shown), or active last month and gone today (expired, removed or suspended).

Open Merchant Center and go to Products → All products. The summary at the top shows how many items are active, pending, disapproved and expiring. Compare the total against the number of products you expect from Shopify. That one comparison tells you which of the sections below applies to you.

1. The product was never sent from Shopify

If the Merchant Center total is lower than your Shopify catalogue, the gap is usually on the Shopify side. In Shopify's Google & YouTube channel, check whether you publish all products or a selected collection — products outside that collection are never sent. Then check each missing product's status in Shopify: it must be Active (not Draft or Archived) and available on the Google & YouTube sales channel (Products → the product → Publishing / sales channels).

Variants matter too. Shopify sends each variant as its own item, but items with no price, no image or an inventory policy that hides them when out of stock can be skipped. Finally, confirm the product is available in the target market you configured in the channel; a product priced only in a market Google is not targeting will not appear.

2. The product is in Merchant Center but still pending

Newly submitted items normally take a few hours to process and up to about three business days to be reviewed before they become active. A brand-new Merchant Center account can also be under account-level review, during which nothing shows regardless of product quality. If everything is pending and the account was created in the last week, waiting is the correct action — check the Account issues tab rather than editing products repeatedly, because edits restart processing.

If items have been pending for more than a week, look under Diagnostics → Account issues for a message about verification, website claim or policy review that is holding the whole account.

3. The feed excluded the product

Some items are received but excluded before review. The usual reasons: no shipping information exists for the target country (Merchant Center will not list a product it cannot show a delivery cost for), the item's destination is set to exclude Shopping ads or free listings (the excluded_destination attribute, or the channel's per-product settings), the product is in a category that requires extra data such as apparel (colour, size, gender, age group) or an unsupported product type, or a required attribute like availability or condition is missing.

In Merchant Center, open the product and read the 'Item issues' panel. Excluded items state the reason plainly; fix the data in Shopify (or via a supplemental feed for attributes Shopify lacks) and allow a few hours for the next feed fetch.

4. The product is disapproved

Disapproved items were received and reviewed, then rejected for a data or policy problem — price mismatch, missing GTIN, image quality, an unreachable landing page, or a policy violation. Merchant Center lists each reason under Diagnostics → Item issues, with the number of affected products and a link to the list.

Disapprovals have their own patterns and fixes, which we cover in detail in our companion guide, Common Google Merchant Center Disapprovals and How to Fix Them. The short version: fix the underlying data in Shopify, make sure the live product page agrees with the feed, and wait for the automatic re-crawl or request a review from the item.

5. Approved, but not showing in Shopping results or ads

An active product is eligible, not guaranteed to appear. For free listings, Google chooses which items to show for which queries, and new or thin products take time to earn impressions; items flagged 'limited performance' (missing identifiers, weak titles) show less. Check the Performance report in Merchant Center to see whether the product has had any impressions at all.

For Shopping Ads, several filters sit between an approved item and an ad: the Google Ads account must be linked and the link accepted on both sides; the campaign must target the same country and language as the feed; the product must be inside the campaign's product groups (an 'Everything else' group that is excluded, or a custom label filter, silently removes items); the item must not be filtered out by inventory filters or feed rules; and the bid or budget must be high enough to win auctions. Use the Products tab inside the Shopping or Performance Max campaign to see each item's status as Google Ads sees it — 'Not eligible' or 'Excluded' there points to a campaign setting, not a feed problem.

6. The product was approved and then disappeared

Items that vanish after a period of showing usually fall into one of five cases. Expiry: every item expires 30 days after it was last updated unless the feed refreshes it, so a feed that stopped fetching or a Shopify channel that lost its connection lets the whole catalogue lapse — Merchant Center flags 'expiring soon' before this happens. Website claim lost: if another account claims your domain, your products stop showing until the claim is restored. Automatic item updates: Google crawled your page, found a different price or availability, and either corrected or disapproved the item. Account suspension or warning: a policy problem at account level removes everything at once and is listed under Account issues. Removed at source: the product was deleted, archived or unpublished in Shopify, or removed by a sync tool — SyncMerchant, for example, surfaces 'deleted in Shopify' items in its Needs attention list so you can see the cause rather than guess.

Start with Diagnostics → Account issues, then the feed's last fetch time, then the product's own history. The most recent change is almost always the cause.

A ten-minute weekly check that prevents most of this

Once a week, open Merchant Center and compare the product count with Shopify; read the Account issues tab (it should be empty); open Item issues and sort by affected products, fixing the top one or two causes at the source rather than one product at a time; confirm the feed's last successful fetch is recent; and glance at 'expiring soon'. If you also run Shopping Ads, open the campaign's Products tab and confirm your best sellers are eligible and serving.

If you would rather have someone else do this — or the count differences and disapprovals have already piled up — our Shopify & Google Merchant Center service includes a diagnostics review, attribute troubleshooting and ongoing monitoring, alongside the SyncMerchant app for keeping Shopify and Merchant Center consistent.
