How to Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center (and Keep Products in Sync)
By AdsZeno · Published 2026-07-20 · Updated 2026-07-20
Step-by-step: creating and verifying a Google Merchant Center account, connecting Shopify through the Google & YouTube channel, checking the product feed, fixing common early errors, and keeping Shopify and Merchant Center in sync afterwards.
The short answer
Shopify connects to Google Merchant Center through Shopify's own Google & YouTube sales channel. Install the channel from the Shopify App Store, sign in with the Google account that owns (or will own) your Merchant Center, connect or create the Merchant Center account, and Shopify builds and submits the product feed for you. Products then appear in Merchant Center within a few hours and update automatically whenever you change them in Shopify.
That covers the Shopify → Merchant Center direction. The reverse — keeping Shopify updated from product data that lives in Merchant Center — is a separate problem that the Google & YouTube channel does not solve; we cover it at the end.
Before you start: what you need
A Shopify store on a paid plan with a live, publicly reachable domain; a Google account; products with the basics filled in (title, description, price, at least one image, and ideally a GTIN or barcode and brand); a shipping and returns policy visible on the site; and your business contact details on the store. Merchant Center checks these during verification and policy review, so fixing them first avoids the most common early rejections.
If you already have a Merchant Center account, note which Google account administers it — the connection must be made from an account with admin access.
Step 1 — Install the Google & YouTube channel in Shopify
In Shopify admin go to Sales channels → add channel → search for 'Google & YouTube' and install it. Click Connect, sign in with your Google account, and either choose your existing Merchant Center account or let Shopify create a new one. Shopify will also ask you to confirm the website domain it should claim in Merchant Center.
If Shopify cannot claim the domain because another Merchant Center account already holds it, you will need to release the claim from that account (Merchant Center → Business information → Website) or connect that account instead.
Step 2 — Set up shipping, tax and target market
Choose the target country and language for your product listings. Shipping settings can be imported from Shopify or configured in Merchant Center; for most Indian stores, flat-rate or free-shipping rules imported from Shopify are enough to start. Tax settings follow the target country's requirements. Merchant Center will not show products until shipping information exists for the target market.
Step 3 — Choose which products sync and check the feed
In the channel settings, decide whether all products or a selected collection are published to Google. Shopify then creates a product feed in Merchant Center (visible under Products → Feeds as a content API source). Give it a few hours, then open Products → All products in Merchant Center and compare the counts: products in Shopify vs. products processed, and how many are active versus pending or disapproved.
Each product in Merchant Center also shows the attributes Shopify sent. The ones that most often need attention are GTIN (from Shopify's barcode field), brand (from the vendor field), google_product_category (set per product or via the channel's bulk editor), and condition.
Step 4 — Fix the common early problems
'Missing value: GTIN' or 'Limited performance due to missing identifiers': add barcodes in Shopify for branded products; for genuinely custom or handmade items, set identifier_exists to false rather than inventing codes. 'Price mismatch' or 'Availability mismatch': Google compares the feed with the live page — check that currency, tax display and variant prices match what a visitor sees. 'Image too small / promotional overlay': use clean images of at least 100×100 px (800×800 recommended) with no text overlays. 'Website needs improvement' or policy disapprovals: make sure returns, shipping and contact information are easy to find on the store.
Account-level issues such as 'misrepresentation' are more serious and usually relate to trust signals on the site rather than product data; address them before spending on Shopping Ads.
Step 5 — Link Google Ads (optional, for Shopping Ads)
In Merchant Center, open Settings → Linked accounts and link your Google Ads account, then accept the link in Google Ads. Once approved products exist, you can create Shopping or Performance Max campaigns that use the feed. Connect conversion tracking first so campaigns optimise toward purchases — our conversion tracking service covers the GA4 and Google Ads setup for ecommerce.
Keeping products in sync afterwards
With the Google & YouTube channel, changes made in Shopify flow to Merchant Center automatically — usually within hours. Problems arise when product data is maintained in Merchant Center or an external feed rather than in Shopify, or when a store uses supplemental feeds for attributes Shopify lacks. In those cases the two systems drift apart: prices, stock and images disagree, and products get disapproved for mismatches.
If Merchant Center holds the master data, a tool such as SyncMerchant can pull products, images, prices, variants and inventory from Merchant Center into Shopify on an hourly, 12-hour or daily schedule, matching items by SKU with GTIN fallback. Whichever direction you choose, pick one system as the source of truth for each attribute, and review Merchant Center diagnostics weekly.
